Cherwell District Council is removing the fees to show its support for its Armed Forces communities as the country prepares to mark 80 years since the end of World War Two in Europe on Thursday, 8 May.

The offer is expected to benefit parish councils and community groups, who are also reminded to apply to the council for a temporary event notice at least 10 days in advance of their event.

Celebrations broke out across the United Kingdom when fighting in Europe came to an end 80 years ago. Free road closures are intended to help street parties take place safely and encourage people to come together to honour the Second World War generation.

Civic events marking VE Day are being run by Banbury Town Council and Bicester Town Council.

In Banbury, the event is happening at the town hall on Thursday, 8 May from 11:30am.

In Bicester, the event is at Garth Park on Thursday, 8 May from 9am to 10:15pm.

To apply to Cherwell for a road closure, people are asked to email their requests to E&C.AdminSupportThorpeLane@Cherwell-DC.gov.uk by the deadline of Tuesday, 15 April.

Free road closures are available for VE Day events taking place between Monday, 5 May and Sunday, 11 May.
