Running from 1 February to 29 March 2025, these initiatives aim to invigorate the local economy and enhance the vibrancy of the district’s urban centres.

The council has secured funding to offer a pitch fee waiver at Banbury Charter Market for existing and new traders during this period. In addition, the funding will enable Bicester and Kidlington market associations to provide rent offers to community groups, charities, and existing and new traders.

Councillor Lesley McLean, Deputy Leader of Cherwell District Council and Portfolio Holder for Finance, Property and Regeneration, said: “Our markets are a cornerstone of the district’s identity and heritage. These special offers provide essential support for our local small businesses during the quieter winter months and encourage new businesses to become part of the thriving market community. This is part of our wider commitment to revitalise our urban centres across Cherwell, ensuring they remain attractive, vibrant spaces for both residents and visitors.”

Councillor Ian Middleton, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “We are proud to invest in the future of market trading. Supporting traders who are vital to the heart of our communities is a priority. As a former market trader myself, I know how a market stall can be a great start for a small business, sometimes leading to bigger things in the future. We want our urban centres to continue flourishing, and we encourage everyone to visit our markets to support the wide diversity of small retail businesses in our towns and villages.”

Emma Gould, manager of Bicester’s Friday Market, added: “We are delighted to see these initiatives supporting our markets. They provide a much-needed boost for both existing and new traders, as well as the wider community. Market trading can be unpredictable, so any assistance is greatly appreciated, especially as we work to bring more people into our centres.”

This initiative is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to bolster the local economy, support small businesses, and drive more footfall into Cherwell’s urban centres.

New traders are encouraged to seize this fantastic opportunity to join a thriving market community and showcase their products to new customers.
