Cherwell District Council is encouraging people to make 2025 their healthiest year yet by signing up for programmes such as Move Together and You Move to improve health and boost energy and mental wellbeing.
Residents in Cherwell who are living with long-term health conditions can receive individualised and holistic support to help them begin their journey to better physical and mental health. From gentle exercises to improve mobility to fitness classes that reignite a passion for movement, the Move Together initiative ensures everyone can thrive, no matter their starting point.
Last year 64 per cent of those using Move Together said their perception of their health had improved, and 51 per cent shared that they had fewer visits to their GP.
Families looking to try out new activities and spend time together can sign up for You Move, a programme open to children who receive free school meals and their parents. A range of free or low-cost physical and lifestyle activities are available to You Move members, including swimming, rugby, badminton, food nutrition classes and boxing.
Councillor Rob Pattenden, Portfolio Holder for Healthy Communities, said: “The biggest and most important step in any journey is the first one, no matter the size of it, and the wonderful thing about our available programmes is that there is someone there to help you to take it.
“I have always been so thrilled to hear about the amazing achievements of our residents on Move Together, whether that is improved mental health, making new friends or improving or reversing health issues.
“Our Youth Activator team are always delighted to see and meet local families at the sessions they hold throughout the year as part of the You Move initiative. Getting outside and taking part in group activities, particularly with your children, is a fun way to get your recommended exercise while spending time together.”
Those participating in Move Together will receive help from programme champions, which includes telephone consultations to ensure participants are getting the best from their experience and have access to chat through their progress with a friendly and understanding supporter.
