Bicester residents have turned out in force to share their ideas for reimagining Market Square, but there’s still time for the community to help shape its future.

Last week, over 200 Bicester residents joined the conversation about Market Square at several different engagement events held in Bicester. The strong turnout and passionate discussions showed how much the community cares about shaping the future of this vital town space.
Residents and local groups shared a wealth of ideas on how to make the most of the £4.25 million funding dedicated to improving the square, ensuring proposals reflect their needs and aspirations.
As part of its ongoing community engagement, Cherwell District Council reminds everyone to have their say by completing a short survey. Visit Bicester Market Square survey to take part. The survey is open until Sunday, 29 December, and every response will help guide the improvements and overall proposals.
Councillor Lesley McLean, Deputy Leader of Cherwell District Council, said:
“The £4.25 million secured for Market Square represents a huge opportunity to make a real difference for Bicester. We’ve seen fantastic engagement so far, and it’s clear that people care deeply about their town.
“This project is all about doing things differently – starting from the ground up with your ideas and building on what matters most to you. It is not about pedestrianising the square; instead, it is about enhancing it for everyone. Whether you’d like more green spaces, better seating, or areas for events and activities, your ideas can help shape a space that serves the whole community.
“I encourage everyone to complete the survey and help us create a Market Square that’s vibrant, inclusive, and reflective of our town’s unique character.”
Residents’ feedback will play a key role in shaping the initial design proposals, which will be shared with the community at public engagement events in January. These events will provide another opportunity for residents and local groups to review and refine the proposals.
Market Square is at the heart of Bicester, and this project aims to make it an accessible, vibrant, and enjoyable space for all. Guided by key goals, the project will:
- Support the local economy: Create flexible areas for businesses and community events
- Improve accessibility: Ensure the square is inclusive for people of all ages and abilities
- Celebrate heritage and identity: Incorporate thoughtful designs that reflect Bicester’s history while looking to the future
- Enhance green spaces: Add planting and shaded areas to create a welcoming, sustainable environment
Residents can also visit a special exhibition at Bicester Library until Saturday 28 December or go online to www.cherwell.gov.uk/bicester-market-square to learn more about the project.
