Disabled adaptations

DFG Top-up Grant

In addition to the Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) we also offer a range of discretionary grants so we can help as many disabled residents in Cherwell in the best way possible. All applications for disabled adaptation grants must be supported by an Occupational Therapist's referral. In these pages we have provided a brief overview of our available grants. If you think that you, or someone you know, would benefit from this grant or any of our other adaptations grants or assistance, contact Oxfordshire County Council to request an Occupational Therapist's assessment.

DFG Top-up Grant Overview

In certain cases where a DFG applicant is assessed as needing complex adaptations costing above the current mandatory DFG limit, we can offer this DFG Top-up grant to enable those adaptations to be completed.

Eligible applicants

  • This grant is available to Cherwell residents who meet the criteria for a Mandatory DFG

Qualifying criteria

  • Complex works have been identified as necessary and appropriate by an Occupational Therapist.
  • A full Mandatory DFG has already been awarded and the applicant does not have the financial resources to fund the required works.

Eligible works

  • Complex DFG eligible adaptation works only.

Key conditions

  • The full value of this grant awarded would be placed as a land charge for up to 10-years from the date of completion of works for owner-occupiers only. This is in addition to any Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant land charge.
  • No more than one top-up grant per property/household.
  • In cases where the adaptations are for a child, the parents/guardian will be subject to a means test.
  • The top-up grant is at the discretion of the Council and subject to available funding and prior consideration and exclusion of lower-cost options.
  • Other standard DFG conditions apply

Maximum grant value

  • Up to £30,000 (awarded in addition to the mandatory DFG, bringing total maximum grant award of £60,000)

Note: All discretionary grants are subject to funding availability and may be withdrawn or amended without notice.
