Following consultation, the Cherwell Design Guide was adopted in July 2018.

The Cherwell Design Guide supports the Council’s drive to raise the standard of residential design across the district. Investment in high quality design today will create a legacy of attractive and successful places for future generations to enjoy.

The Design Guide is a technical document that provides specific guidance to deliver the strategic vision for high quality sustainable development set out in the Cherwell Local Plan 2011-2031. It is a technical guide, providing clarity on the standards of design expected by the Council and supports a streamlined planning process and the timely delivery of new homes.

The Design Guide is focused on those areas that can make a real difference in forming new residential neighbourhoods. A key theme in the guide is establishing development which fits with the existing character of local architecture. Creating good places is not only about buildings and the guide also focuses on well-designed streets public spaces local centres and community facilities.

The guide is designed to be used by everyone involved in shaping places: developers, designers, local residents, Council officers and politicians. Following public consultation, the Design Guide will be adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document and will be a material consideration in the determination of planning applications.
