If approached by a scrap dealer or anyone else offering cash to remove waste, residents should request proof of their license before allowing them to take the unwanted items away.
Residents who receive cold callers whom they believe to be collecting scrap metal unlawfully should alert the police service and their local Neighbourhood Watch group.
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, residents have a duty of care to ensure their waste is properly disposed of. A £1,000 fine can be imposed on anyone found to be the owner of fly-tipped waste.
You can find local licensed waste carriers, brokers and dealers through the Environment Agency website
